Concerned about wrinkles?

imagesWrinkles are mostly associated with aging. Though there are also cases where wrinkles are caused prematurely due to certain skin deformities or due to heredity. Wrinkles are mainly found to target the softer and sensitive skin of our body, especially the face.  As aging starts, the cells of our skin become thinner and ultimately lose elasticity because of the decreased levels of collagen production in our body. The skin cells divide more slowly, thus delaying repair and renewal process of the skin.  Since there is no new cell production, the gap between the cells widens, which causes the skin to sag. This sagging in turn forms wrinkles or mark lines on the skin.

Wrinkles are also caused from damage to the skin. This happens usually due to long exposure to sunlight. The direct exposure of the skin to the UV rays of the sunlight corrodes the epidermis or upper layer of the skin. This can ultimately lead to skin cancer.

Formation of free radicals in the skin also causes it to wrinkle.  Free radicals contribute to the speedy breakdown of collagen in the skin.  Free radicals are developed on the skin through continued exposure to ultraviolet rays of the sun, air pollution and cigarette smoking.

Ways to Fight wrinkles

Firstly, the most important way is to prevent UV ray exposure. Apply a proper sun screen lotion on the face and the areas exposed. A balanced diet with proper nutrition and hydration. To drink plenty of water and not forget to drink at least a glass of water after waking up from sleep in the morning. To have fruits, vegetables and fish regularly in diet. To avoid tea, coffee, and smoking.

To get a sound sleep as possible as well, at least eight hours a day.

Lastly, go for a facial massage once a week.

Why People Suffer From Dental Phobia

Dental phobia is the serious, often paralyzing fear of seeking dental care. A very reliable source of survey report says that 50% of the American population does not go for regular dental care. An estimated 9-15% of the American people stay away from much needed care due to anxiety and fear surrounding the dental experience.

This can have serious ramifications on ones overall and especially general health. Unhealthy gums and teeth can definitely affect one’s speech. One’s self esteem can also suffer a lot if the person feels insecure about his breath and smile. This can obviously lead to various limitations in one’s social and business environments.

But why do people suffer from such dental phobia? There are certain reasons why people are so scared of visiting a dentist. The reason could be any of the following:

Bad experiences: The most common cause for dental phobia is some previous bad some dental experiences. This not only includes painful dental visits, but also psychological behaviors such as being ill treated by a dentist.

Uncaring dentist: It is often believed that even among dental professionals, that it is the fear of pain that keeps people from visiting a dentist. But if pain is the major concern for people then why should people not run to a dentist to get rid of acute toothache? It is rather the fear of pain inflicted by a dentist, which has a huge psychological impact.

Humiliation: Another big cause of dental phobia include insensitive, humiliating remarks by a dentist or hygienist. In fact, insensitive remarks and the intense feelings of humiliation they provoke are one of the main factors, which can cause or contribute to a dental phobia.

Vicarious learning: Another cause is observational learning. If a parent or any other family member is scared of dentists, kids easily pick up on this and learn that it is normal to be scared of dentists, even in the absence of bad experiences. Sometimes also, hearing other people’s horror stories makes children stay away from the dental care visits.

Post-Traumatic Stress: Research suggests that people who’ve had horrific dental experience suffer from symptoms typically reported by people with post-traumatic stress disorder. This is characterized by intrusive thoughts of the bad experience and nightmares about dentists or dental situations.

Effects of Smoking on Your Teeth

Studies reveal that smoking has been actively responsible for some or the other serious ailment to almost 8.6 million people in the U.S. Although it seems to relieve you of stress and pressure on a temporary basis, it slowly and surely gnaws at your health from within, opening up stark possibilities of dental ill health, tooth loss, and gum problems, let alone the menaces of chest cancer and heart problems. In fact, smoking adversely affects your immune system on the whole, weakening your body to the extent of becoming incapable to fight infections.

Some of the negative effects of smoking on teeth can be listed as below:

Tooth Loss

Tooth loss is something that no one would like to encounter. A gap in your smile will certainly not make a good impression on the onlooker. But smoking is one of the most glaring reasons of tooth loss. Smoking results in the decay of the teeth and subsequently, erosion of teeth.

Gum Problems

Gum problems is one of the major negatives of smoking. Several gum diseases or periodontal diseases are initiated through smoking. This results in swelling on the gum areas that gradually loosen the strong teeth formation. The poisons generated from the tobacco destroy the body’s immune system altogether, thereby undermining the healing process to the extent that several surgeons avoid extended treatments on these patients. People do harbor notions that tooth decay or gum decay are hereditary diseases but it is not so.

Discoloration

Discoloration or the staining of teeth is one of the disturbing results of smoking. The nicotine and tar settle and stain your teeth and make them yellow. Chain smokers are even seen to have brown teeth in case they have been smoking for several years. The look of stained or yellow teeth is certainly unattractive.

Accumulation of bacteria or formation of plaque on your teeth is a common botheration of smoking. Actually whenever we do not brush our teeth we find a kind of gluey white substance building up on our teeth and that substance is called plaque. Easy Tips for Weight Loss

One of the commonest New Year resolutions happens to be ‘weight loss’. I am not much of a fatso myself but, of late, I was being bothered of gaining some weight due to the the enormous amount of desk work that I am involved in. Apart from a rare stroll to my neighbor’s cubicle, I find myself mostly seated in the comfy chair typing on the keyboard or scribbling on papers. It was high time I took a resolution. I did.

For the past 1 month I engaged myself into a resolute but easy exercise and diet regime and it is already showing results. Some the must dos included in my routine are as follows:

  • Visit to the gym twice a week

  • 35 minute ride on the stationary bike

  • Diet consisting of tasty fruits, low calorie yogurt and low fat biscuits

  • Taking the road route back from office – a 20 minute walk.

Believe it or not, I have lost 5 pounds and am feeling great – light, fresh, healthy and confident.
